Well, our long weekend in England turned into something of a mini-cook’s tour in the end, with Pa Bear taking us to Colston Basset (where we picked up a 3-kilo wheel of Stilton), Melton Mowbray (more pork pies than you can shake a stick at) and Bakewell. Actually, we didn’t eat any tarts there, but we did have some rather delicious scones, with clotted cream and strawberry jam natch’. Dinner Saturday evening was at the Reindeer Inn at Long Bennington, where CB (Chéri Bear) had a chicken, leek, mushroom and Stilton pie he described as “life-changing” and I drew up the paperwork to sell my soul for another scoop of lemon-curd ice cream. You’d think we’d have had enough by then but the next day, after a hearty cooked breakfast, we wolfed down a marvellous Sunday roast with the family, followed by apple crumble and cheesecake, and then rounded the day off nicely with a trip to the Chequers Inn at Elston to sample a pint of their (delicious) Brandy Snap ale. Needless to say, it’s been soup and crackers since we got back. Anyone got any recipes for 3 kilos of Stilton?
